Start with the range you want to build

Before comparing samples, define your customer, sales channel and intended price position. A retailer adding a plant-based option has a different brief from a distributor looking for a familiar mineral format. Record the target pack size, selling price, expected volume and storage conditions. These decisions make supplier quotations easier to compare.

Compare the finished product

Bentonite litter uses a clay-based formulation. Tofu litter describes a plant-based category, but the name does not establish the complete ingredient list. Ask for the actual formulation, additives and relevant quality limits. Avoid assuming that all products within either category perform alike.

For a useful comparison, test the samples with the same litter depth, liquid volume, waiting time and scooping method. Record clump formation and strength separately. A quickly formed clump can still break during removal. Check dust and tracking under a repeatable handling method rather than judging only a photograph.

Put packaging into the calculation

Compare net weight and stated volume separately. Ask how volume is measured and confirm the packed dimensions. Retail bag size, carton layout, pallet arrangement and container loading all affect the cost of serving your market. Include the agreed freight basis and destination charges when calculating landed cost.

Test the actual package for your sales channel. A bag intended for a retail shelf may face different handling from one shipped individually by an online seller. Confirm seals, labeling, material structure and the required protection during transport.

Use a short approval checklist

  • Document the agreed composition and particle or pellet dimensions.
  • Record each test method, result and acceptance limit.
  • Approve the pack, label and barcode artwork.
  • Keep a labeled reference sample for the production order.
  • Confirm MOQ, lead time and inspection requirements in the quotation.

Do not assume plant-based litter is suitable for flushing, composting or disposal in a particular waste stream. Product instructions and local requirements need to support any such claim. For purchasing, a clear written specification is more useful than a broad environmental slogan.

This guide is a purchasing framework. Confirm product-specific performance, documentation and commercial terms in your quotation.
