Start with the selling unit
Record the net weight or stated volume of each retail bag and how the supplier determines that quantity. Weight and volume are different measurements: the same stated bag volume does not guarantee the same weight across cat litter formulations. Ask for the finished bag dimensions and gross weight, including packaging.
Confirm the pack features your sales channel needs, such as resealing, carrying and protection during parcel delivery. Review the bag material structure, seal quality and approved artwork together. A loose sample cannot show whether the final retail pack will tolerate your distribution process.
Build a packing data sheet
Ask the supplier for bags per carton, external carton dimensions, carton gross weight and the proposed loading method. If pallets are required, include pallet dimensions, stacking arrangement and height. Identify whether the quoted dimensions describe filled, transport-ready cartons or empty packaging.
Use one packing sheet for each SKU. A mixed shipment may contain different bag formats and carton sizes, so a single average can conceal a loading problem. Confirm carton markings and how each product will be identified when the shipment arrives.
Check both space and weight constraints
Container planning depends on the proposed container, packed product density, cartons or pallets and the route's handling constraints. A volume calculation alone is not a confirmed loading plan. Ask the supplier and freight provider to verify the actual configuration, permitted weights and operational requirements for the shipment.
For a first estimate, carton count multiplied by carton gross weight gives the cartonized cargo weight; packaging supports and pallets must be considered separately. External carton length multiplied by width and height gives carton volume when all dimensions use consistent units. Neither calculation captures every gap, orientation or access requirement inside the container.
Agree floor loading or pallets before quoting
The receiving warehouse's unloading method affects the packing request. Confirm whether the buyer needs pallets, handling access, specific carton labels or a maximum stack arrangement. Share those requirements before comparing freight or unit prices so each quotation describes the same shipment.
Ask how bags and cartons will be protected from expected handling and storage conditions. Establish what photographs, packing records or third-party checks are required before dispatch. The relevant evidence should show the agreed order and its packing configuration.
Use a pre-shipment handover
- Approved specification and sample reference for each product.
- Final bag artwork, net contents and carton markings.
- SKU quantities and a confirmed packing list.
- Loading method, dimensions and weights checked for the proposed shipment.
- Inspection plan and documents agreed for the destination.
Start with the wholesale product range, then include pack size, destination and intended volume in your cat litter quotation request. Mainland can discuss packing requirements for your selected formulation; a loading quantity must be confirmed for the actual order.
